Mediocracy and the Rise of Suburbia

I believe that, ever since the 1950s, a sort of 'mediocracy' (or rule of the mediocre) has been prevalent in culture. This is only accentuated in political culture after the fall of the Soviet Union, end of Modernism, and death of the Cold War. Before then, there were strictly defined political boundaries, and because of the lack of a large group of 'independent' centrists that politicians had to win over in elections, they could actually get things done. However, now, after the Cold War, there are no clearly defined boundaries. Centrists account for the majority of the population, and, like sheep, elect the candidate that is not in office, forgetting the merits and drawbacks of each candidate. Politicians don't get things done, rather, they pander to the masses, defining their regime by whatever may get them the most votes in the next election
